Weight Loss Q &A

What is medical weight loss?

Medical weight loss differs from surgical weight loss in that it does not utilize any type of surgical procedure such as gastric bypass or sleeve, lap band, or gastric balloon. Research has shown that permanent weight loss is most successful when a person commits to a structured program that includes regular visits.

A highly trained team is essential to provide teaching and support, combined with medical visits to monitor medications, blood tests, weight, blood pressure, and general health concerns. High-quality meal replacements are used in medical programs to ensure a rapid, safe, and steady loss of fat while protecting against loss of lean muscle. For NorthShore Weight and Metabolism’s medical program, they use the New Direction® products. New Direction® is only available to physicians.

What should I expect at NorthShore Weight and Metabolism?

A personalized experience...

You will have a weight loss consultation with the Director of Nutrition, Jennifer, to learn a bit about you and what type of plan would work best. You then meet with Dr. Costello for her to review your medical history, medications, and lifestyle habits to ensure that the program is safe for you. You will have screening blood work and an EKG.

Once you start the program, you will meet virtually with Jennifer every 1-2 weeks depending on your program, and you will meet with Dr. Costello once per month (in person or virtually). Your weekly meetings with Jennifer will be to discuss your progress, any difficulties you may be having, and to focus on any behaviors that may be slowing your weight loss. Your body composition scale transfers all your measurements to the NSWM Application (used on iPhone or Android), so Dr. Costello and Jennifer can analyze your weight, and specifically your fat, muscle, and body water changes.

What does my weight loss plan consist of?

The NorthShore Weight and Metabolism team customizes a weight-loss plan that will suit you and your lifestyle and will produce weight loss at the rate you desire. They have more aggressive plans for those seeking relatively rapid weight loss (to prepare for surgery, for example) as well as less strict plans for slower loss. Meal replacements (puddings, shakes, soups, bars, snacks) and regular grocery food are used, designed for your specific plan.

Dr. Costello is able to manage any chronic illnesses related to your weight such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, or thyroid disease. It’s also fine if your primary care provider would prefer to continue to manage these things while you lose weight.
